Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Islamabad gifted 100 customized wheelchairs to disabled people in Pakistan

The Embassy of Azerbaijan in Islamabad on Tuesday gifted 100 customized wheelchairs to people with disabilities in Pakistan during a ceremony held at Aiwan-e-Sadr in the capital city.

The event was attended by Pakistan President Dr. Arif Alvi, First Lady Samina Alvi, and Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Pakistan Ali Alizada, in the presence of a number of disabled persons and children.

Addressing the Wheelchair Distribution Ceremony, President Dr. Arif Alvi stressed the need for adopting an inclusive approach towards people with disabilities such that they are provided with quality education at regular schools instead of specialized institutions. He further asserted that persons with disabilities deserve equal access to education and employment as their equitable right, and not as charity.

“It is the time to shun the stereotype approach towards disabled persons and give them opportunities and access to facilities,” Dr. Alvi affirmed.

During the ceremony, the President and the first lady personally approached each individual to present the customized wheelchairs to them.

Dr. Alvi went on to praise the efforts and contribution made by Azerbaijan’s embassy and its diplomats towards the socio-welfare development of disabled people in Pakistan through various projects across a number of fields such as health, education, and culture.

He highlighted that the Pakistani government has registered around two million persons with disabilities under the Ehsaas project with the aim of providing them with stipends to support their needs. At the same time, banks have also initiated a number of schemes for special persons to facilitate ease in applying loans such that they are able to start small and medium enterprises.

Azerbaijan’s ambassador Ali Alizada noted that the wheelchairs have been gifted to the disabled persons in Pakistan as a manifestation of the support of the two nations towards the rights and needs of the people with disabilities.

Extending gratitude towards Azerbaijan for gifting wheelchairs to the disabled people, the President stated that the gesture shows Azerbaijan’s compassion and respect to ensure their welfare and development.

President Arif Alvi and Begum Samina Alvi also paid a visit to the exhibition of paintings and handicrafts made and organized by children with disabilities between the ages of 12 to 15 years.
